GARDEN PROJECT

Description. The garden territory is very small and most of it is occupied by the living house. The pavements are already established - a small area for car parking, which serves also as a path for walking around the house and a little terrace by the main entrance. There are some evergreen plantings including a thuja hedge in the front yard, which is partly decayed under two existing birches. On the opposite side the garden territory is surrounded by a hedge of Crataegus laevigata. On two sides the garden borders to a street.

Client's requirements. The client wanted something very colorful by the house entrance and rest area. In the parking area the green belt should be filled with low, hardy plants. The client loves roses and flowering perennials - they should be planted on the south side of the house. In general the client wants an abundantly flowering and fragrant garden.

Design concept. The small flowerbeds by the main house entrance are planted by mixed annuals with big flowers Begonia x tuberhybrida of orange, white and red sorts. Additional decorativity is allocated by vertical greenery - Clematis with big flowers flowering in July and the especially fragrant Lonicera caprifolium flowering in June. Further a mixed group of perennials is  planned from white and blue Campanula carpatica and mixed colors of Delphinium cultorum, which all have a long flowering period.

Under the birch trees by the gate the half-dead thujas are removed and modest shrubs are planted: Cornus alba ‘Elegantissima' with white tabby leaves and Forsythia ovata, which will flower early in the spring with yellow abundant flowers. Under the shrubs in shade Lysimachia punctata will flower with yellow flowers and Hosta ‘Undulata' will be decorative all season with white and green leaves. The most decorative and long flowering will be Lavandula angustifolia, Gailardia ‘Kobold', Leucanthemum superbum ‘Wirral Supreme' and the annual Tagetes tenuifolia and Amaranthus caudatus with a distinguished form. Permanent decorativity also in winter will be provided by evergreen Euonymus fortunei and Vinca minor ‘Argenteovariegata'. The green belt between the car tracks is filled by Festuca gautierii, which forms round mounds of decorative grass.

On the other side in the main garden area the existing hedge is maintained, which screens the garden from both streets as well as a small form spruce and a small area of existing junipers. A mixed group of plantings is arranged around an oval lawn area. The plant group consists of a few higher accents - a decorative small tree Rhus typhina, the red colored shrub Physocarpus opulifolius ‘Diabolo' and a shrub with bright yellow leaves Sambucus nigra ‘Aurea'. By the gates evergreen perennials are planned Bergenia cordifolia ‘Balawley' and also evergreen Pachysandra terminalis as a ground cover under the tree. Heuchera micrantha ‘Palace Purple' and ‘Sedum telephium' will have decorative leaves all season. In front of the shrubs and hedge higher beautiful perennials are planned: Campanula persicifolia ‘Weisse Glocke', Echinaceae purpurea, Cimicifuga racemosa, Ligularia przewalskii and Helenium ‘Moerheim Beauty'. In the most shady corner shade tolerant Omphalodes verna are projected under an existing yew.

The south side of the house is all planted with roses - higher sorts in the corner and the abundantly flowering low sorts in a narrow belt beside the summer entrance. In early spring low rise bulbs will flower between the roses. Towards the entrance gate the gracious Geum with red and yellow flowers are mixed in a transparent planting group in front of the roses.
