GARDEN PROJECT

Description. The garden is small, it is situated at the crossing of two streets. There is an overhang for car parking by the house and also the front side of the house is used for parking. The green area has a triangle form and it is situated in the corner near the crossing of two streets. Another special condition of this site is two corners on both sides of the house, which are covered by overhangs - as a result neither the grass nor any plants can grow in these areas.

Client's requirements. The client wished to design only the green area and to leave the household zone untouched. In the front of the house, where the owners are used to park cars, they wanted to plan an area with hard pavement. The recreational area they wanted to screen from the streets and to place a standard hexagon shape gazebo there. They also wanted to place the existing rocking-chair in the garden. An important issue is to solve the overhang problem, where nothing grows underneath. In the recreational area the client wanted to establish a small area of intensive maintenance lawn and to have various colorful plantings by keeping also some of the existing shrubs. The existing fruit trees also should be preserved.

Design concept. The parking area is projected to be paved it with concrete pavers. The paved area is quite big proportionally to the garden size, therefore it is divided in colorful plots from different color pavers. In such a way we get a colorful composition by the garden entrance and also visually link together the paved area with the rest of the garden. By the neighbour's fence a sculptural group of conifers is planned to give a green accent to the large concrete area and also to act as a representative planting.

The existing tree by the entrance gates is kept as the client wished and it is placed into a pavement of white pebbles, which will contrast beautifully with the red pavement area and also provide a surface for walking.

The plantings by the main street are moved aside from the fence to establish a paved area for the dog, which is used to run along the fence. The existing shrubs are maintained in the newly designed planting group, which has spring flowering shrubs by the entrance and summer flowering plants by the gazebo.

The path of black pavers leads from the garden entrance to the gazebo and from gazebo towards the house entrance, which is situated on the back side of the house.

The recreational zone embraces plants with a long flowering period during the warm season as well as scented plants. The existing rocking-chair is placed by the new path, surrounded by richly flowering plantings. A mobile garden table with chairs is placed opposite the rocking chair. It can be moved around freely over the lawn.

The house overhang problem is solved by paving the area underneath with decorative stones and by designing 2 different art installations, which have the same concept, but which are created in two different contrasting colors. The installations will contrast with the plants in front and they also will be lit beautifully during the dark hours, at the same time creating interesting shadow play on the walls of the house.
