GARDEN PROJECT

Description. The garden is situated in a city, on the crossing of two quiet streets by a wooden house and garage building, made of white bricks. The territory contains a small green area between the house and the street. Beside the neighbouring street there is a railroad.

Client's requirements. The client wished to implement many functions in the small area: a parking lot for 2 cars, some screening elements from the railroad and street, a dining terrace with some scented plants, decorative flowerbeds and evergreen plantings, a small spruce to decorate in the Christmas time and a lawn for relaxation and some activities. The client wanted to have a lot of colour and contrast in the garden.

Design concept. The garden is designed by using the small available space in the most useful way. There is a little wooden terrace by the entrance, but not too small to place the dining table outside. As the client wanted some scented plants by the entrance, but the space is very small, a climber Lonicera caprifolium is planted by the glass veranda - it flowers abundantly in June with beautiful, sweetly scented flowers.

The car parking area is positioned by the veranda in a 90 degree turn from the entrance. The cars and the railroad is screened from the terrace by a decorative trellis with purple clematis. The plant group screening the railroad is positioned in three layers: the highest layer consists of the climbers by the trellis, the middle layer is formed of beautifully flowering hydrangeas and the lowest layer consists of scented perennials with a long flowering period during the warmest time: Lavandula angustifolia, Gailardia ‘Kobold' and Salvia x splendens ‘Blaukönigin'. The dining terrace is hidden behind the plantings and thus it becomes a very cosy resting area with a view towards the lawn and distant flowerbed by the fence.

On the other side by the garage wall there is a quiet shady place appropriate for evergreen rhododendrons and Euonymus fortunei ‘Emerald and Gold' - these plants will be decorative also in winter season, when looking from the bedroom.

By the fence bordering the street a hedge of decorative thujas is planted. It will form a dark background, which will contrast beautifully with the colorful flowers in the front. While the thujas are still to small to screen the view from the street, a temporary screen made of reeds is fastened to the fence. The planting group by the fence has two main elements: a spruce in the corner and a small, decorative tree Rhus typhina, which has beautiful inflorescences and leaves. Underneath the trees  small, shade tolerating shrubs Symphoricarpos rivularis ‘Hancok' are planted, which will have decorative berries in the winter.  The perennials are arranged in two levels: the highest level consists of beautiful column form flowers Ligularia przewalskii and Delphinium grandiflorum as well as other higher flowers - Iris Barbata Elatior and Paeonia lactiflora for spring flowering, Helenium autumnale for autumn flowering, and Phlox paniculata sorts, Leucanthemum maximum and Achillea ptarmica ‘The Pearl' for long flowering period.  The lowest perennial level is situated in the front and it consists of Astilbe x arendsii ‘Fanal' and Campanula carpatica ‘Blue Clips', which both have quite a long flowering period, if maintained adequately. The entrance gate is accented by a decorative tree of a globe-shaped foliage Acer platanoides ‘Globosum'.
