GARDEN PROJECT

Description. The Royal Villa garden is situated in a hot desert climate zone. It is a part of a luxury hotel complex. The Royal villa is a 3 - storey house with a view towards the water, intended for renting to one family. There is a long narrow space along the East side of the building, separated by a high wall from the street and bordering to a sea coast on one side.

Client's requirements. The client asked to design a shaded rest area in the garden with a view towards the sea and some trees along the side of the garden to provide shade before midday. The client also wants a path around the garden and abundantly flowering plant compositions. The client prefers to avoid lawn areas in this garden since lawn requires more maintenance in this climate than plantings. The client wants to screen the garden from the common villa area by dense plantings.

Design concept. The design concept is to create a vivid, dynamic composition of colorful plant layers like an attractive painting to be viewed from the rest area and the villa windows.

The projected row of trees by the border wall will provide shade until midday, but the villa building itself will cast shade over a part of the garden in afternoons.

The rest area with sofas and a sun visor is situated close to the back entrance of the villa near the sea. The walking path starts from the rest area, leads around the garden in the form of number eight and returns back to the rest area.

On the other side of the garden a bench is projected, from which the garden can be viewed at full length.

The central part of the composition is designed from colorful ground covers: Rhoeo discolor, Gazania splendens mix, Setcresea purpurea, Vinca rosea white sort and Vinca rosea pink sort. In the widest part Sansevieria trifasciata ‘Marginata' planted in a round group will create an upright accent. The Setcresea purpurea wave continues in the second loop of the path joined by Lantana camara and Petunia x tuberhybrida and concluded by a colorful mix of Gazania splendens.

In front of the bench another round group of Sansevieria trifasciata ‘Marginata' is planned to act as the upright accent of the composition.

On the outer sides of the path higher plants are projected, starting from Pennisetum setaceum ‘Rubrum', Cycas revoluta, Ixora chinensis, Agave marginata, Hymenocallis litoralis, Ruellia ciliosa and Agapanthus africanus and ending with higher plants like: Yucca filamentosa, Strelitzia reginae, Canna indica mix, Musa cavendishii ‘Dwarf', Callistemon viminalis and Bambusa vulgaris.

From the common street the garden is separated by higher plants: Bougainvillea spectabilis, Caesalpina gilliesii and Tecoma smithii.

The rest area is surrounded by abundantly flowering and aromatic ground covers: Lavandula angustifolia and Petunia x tuberhybrida. Further by the coast a layer of Sessivium portulacastrum and Lampranthus roseus is planted.
