GARDEN PROJECT

Description. The existing garden has two large buildings - a living house and a pool house. The pavement is made of concrete pavers and the garden lamps are also existing. On the south side of the pool house there is a wooden terrace with a round area for barbecue. On the other side there is a small sand playground projected for children's play equipment. The garden is surrounded by an existing thuja hedge. There are existing evergreen plantings and row of spruces planted in form of arc. The spruces are planted too close together. The paths are bordered by hedges on each side, which make the garden look smaller and restrict the movement across the garden as well as create a sense of a limited, enclosed space. There are also big existing pines in the area since the garden is situated in a seaside city on a dune base.

Client's requirements. The main request from the client was to bring more colors in the garden, more flowers, more scent. The client wanted to accent the garden entrance by annual flowers and also to plant colorful flowerbeds by the summer terrace. On two sides of the garden, where the existing hedges are situated, the client wanted to plant colorful flowerbeds in the front.

Design concept. The design concept basically is to make the garden more attractive and colorful. The first task is to remove the hedges by all pavements to make the space more open and accessible. Access to the wooden terrace is also opened to provide a free movement between the terrace and lawn.

In layout variation Nr. 1 three yellow thujas at the end of a hedge accentuate the garden entrance. In the front colorful shrubs and perennials are planned, which will outshine beautifully on the dark green background of the hedge. On the other side of the path a plant group with conifers, shrubs with decorative leaves and long flowering perennials are planned. Annual flowers are planted in a separate oval flowerbed on the background of small form spruces. Further at the corner of the house a colorful group of decorative shrubs and perennials is planned in front of the hedge. On both sides of the pool terrace a low groups of flowering ground covers and annuals are planned. Richly flowering ground covers and small shrubs are also planned by the house terrace. The row of spruces is maintained in this variation since they can still grow for some years until they spread to close to each other. If the client wants to divide the garden with these spruces, they can be clipped into a hedge. Otherwise they can be removed after several years - it will make the garden space visually bigger. Next to the children's playground there is another group of flowering perennials and small shrubs, which will be most decorative in the hottest summer months.

In variation Nr. 2 the plant group by the garden entrance is merged with the plantings by the pool terrace and barbecue area. In such way the plant composition is bigger and more appropriate to the scale of the buildings. Plant groups on both sides of the garden entrance are made of colorful annuals, perennial flowers with long decorativity period and evergreen conifers, which will be decorative also in winter. The entrance is accentuated by two groups of stones situated on each side of the entrance path - one in the lawn and the other one in the plantings. The plant group which starts by the entrance continues along the hedge with a mixed plant group all around the garden. In places, where the plant group is viewed from a longer distance, there are higher flowering plants. The plant group develops into a waving rhythm further along the hedge and shade loving perennials are planned in shady places under the hedge. On the south side of the house a richly flowering group of roses is planned. Beside the house the roses will be so high, that the flowering branch tops will be seen from the house windows. In the area, where the spruce trees were growing previously, a gazebo is planned for a quiet rest in the surrounding of a richly flowering flowerbed. In the view from the gazebo another flowerbed is planned with a group of long flowering perennials. The neighbouring garden in this area is screened by a trellis with climbers.

In variation Nr. 3 the plant groups are arranged symmetrically to the garden entrance. The entrance composition is designed in a formal pattern by using a rhythm of sculptural miniature spruces Picea abies ‘Conica'. The house rest area and the pool terrace are embraced by mixed plant groups with a lot of flowering perennials and shrubs. The lawn is planned in bigger areas for different summer activities and sunbathing - two big areas in front of the house on both sides of the entrance road and one bigger area in direct access from the pool terrace and children's playground to provide space for children to play in the lawn. All around the house a belt of lawn is planned beside the path for placing the snow in wintertime.
