GARDEN PROJECT

Description. The territory of the garden is situated in a country surroundings, it has quite a large area - 7200 m2. The existing values of the territory is a beautiful large oak and an old avenue of ash-trees. The living house is designed in a modern, untraditional shape - it's conception is to merge the building with the surrounding landscape, therefore it is planned to establish a "green roof" for the building. The building also unifies the old and the modern as old stone walls are maintained in one part of the building. The same type of stone walls have survived the time in ruins in the middle of the territory.

Client's requirements. The client's wishes for this project were to plan a colorful garden, which would be decorative all through the year by maintaining the natural values of the territory - the views to the surrounding fields, the wild flowers in the grass and natural looking landscape. The client also wished to have a pond for swimming with a small sauna house and a recreational area outside with a fireplace, suitable for garden parties, a children's playground and a small vegetable garden.

Design concept. The landscape design concept is to unite visually the garden with the building by using the same plants for the "green roof" as for the slope coming down from the roof and also by unifying the forms of the nearby garden constructions with the architectural lines. The garden area is divided in intensive maintenance lawn and wild meadow area in places, where useful herbs can be found, which also will reduce the necessary garden maintenance intensity. Decorative garden plants, many of which are also scented, are planned beside the building and recreational area, but more distant areas will be filled with wild decorative shrubs to merge naturally with the surrounding country landscape. The north side of the garden is bordered by dense shrub plantings to screen the view from the distant road and to block the dust coming from the road side. The outdoor activities required by the client are grouped into functional zones: representative zone, household zone, recreational zone, and children's play zones.

Representative zone. The representative zone embraces the area by the main entrance - the living house facade with the surrounding plantings, the slope coming down from the roof, the garden gates and the ash-tree avenue - basically it is the first view towards the house, which can be seen, when approaching the territory. It is a very important landscape area because it creates the first impression of a visitor. The plantation on the roof has a completely new approach in the gardening field. It is planned to plant it all over with decorative grass Miscanthus sinensis, which is a drought tolerant and sun loving plant, therefore perfectly suitable for a roof garden. It will create a dynamic, wavy impression since the grass has beautiful hanging inflorescences, which are graciously moving in the wind. The decorative grass will visually connect the living house roof area with the surrounding landscape because it will be planted also around the house on the ground level. The natural look of the site will be stressed also by planting a stand of new birch trees. At the same time for evergreen effect also spruce trees will be planted. The white birch stems will make a beautiful contrast with the spruces and the newly planted trees will also create a new generation of trees in future instead of the old ash-tree avenue.

A sculptural group of plants accents the main entrance of the house. The lowest level is planted with round-shaped thujas, but the upper planting level is created by round-shaped Salix integra ‘Hakuro Nishiki' with colorful leaves planted in a line. Further the planting group develops into mixed shrub plantings, which have scented properties to let the fresh flowering scent in the house, when opening the windows.

The pavement lines in the representative area repeat the straight architecture lines of the house, a wooden path of such straight lines in different angles starts by the pedestrian gates and goes around the house towards the recreational area.

In the representative area in front of the entrance a spruce Picea glauca ‘Koster' is planted to decorate it in the Christmas time.

Recreational zone. The recreational zone is placed in the south - west side of the house. It contains several resting areas: the wooden terrace by the summer entrance of the house, the terrace placed in the old stone ruins with a garden fireplace, active rest area on the lawn of intensive maintenance, the area around fireplace and the pondside rest area with a sauna house, a wooden terrace and a lawn for sunbathing. The recreational zone contains several flowerbeds composed of plants, which flower in the warmest months of the year, when the recreational zone is most intensively used. There are also groups of scented flowers planned in areas nearby the terraces. There is an existing group of wild roses Rosa pimpinellifolia growing by the ruin teracce - it is maintained and included in the new planting group. The view from the ruin terrace is beautiful - towards the surrounding forest and the newly planned pond. By moving down the steps from the ruin terrace through a group of wild roses you will get to the pondside recreational area. A wooden path meanders around the garden towards the pond and continues over the pond on pontoons by dividing the pond area in two different zones: the deep swimming zone and the shallow planting zone, which is planted by water loving plants in several depth levels. By walking over the pond it will feel like "walking on water". The sauna will also have a wooden terrace hanging over the water, which will connect to the wooden path on pontoons.

Children's play zone. The children's play zone is situated in a meadow-type lawn. There are two play areas: one in direct view from the ruin terrace, other one situated in between the old ash-tree avenue and the newly planted birch trees, in direct view from the lounge windows.

Household zone. The household zone involves the vegetable garden. The concept of the vegetable garden is not to hide it from view as it is usually done in gardens, but to integrate it in the overall garden composition and to combine it with decorative plants to achieve a decorative effect. Beets and dill can also be decorative, if combined in adequate plant compositions.
