GARDEN PROJECT

Description. The garden has a long shape and it is situated with a short side towards the street. All other sides are bordering to neighbouring gardens. The living house is situated at the furthermost end of the garden, but a household building with a garage and barn is situated nearby the street. From all sides the garden is enclosed by a fence and some unpleasant looking neighbour's walls. There are big existing trees in the garden as well as in the neighbouring properties, therefore the garden is quite shady. Only the middle part of the garden is sunny. There are also some existing shrubs in the garden, a hedge of hawthorns towards the south side and wooden retaining walls on a slope in the south corner. Also a small piece of pavement is established on the path by the house entrance.

Client's requirements. In the area by the house entrance the client wanted to plan appropriate plantings since all efforts to establish a flowerbed there had failed because the corner is too shady. A pedestrian path has to be planned from the garden gates towards the house and connected to the existing piece of pavement. The living house also has to be accessible by car, so there should be an open area in the lawn, suited for driving without any obstacles. The client wanted to design individual equipment for the children's playground including a play treehouse and to project placement of a trampoline for children. A small sport's area should be planned for basketball and a gazebo with a summer terrace. The client wanted a small spice garden with some berry shrubs and a compost heap. By the household building a parking lot should be planned, which should be screened by dense plantings from the rest of the garden. The client also wanted to include some fruit trees in the new plantings.

Design concept. The main task of the new design is to use the garden space in the most efficient way since the garden has a very long shape, which creates some restrictions for the layout concept. The required functions are situated by the garden sides and the middle part is left open, so that the garden would look possibly bigger and the lawn would consist of bigger united areas, which could be used for different recreational activities.

In layout variation Nr. 1 the parking lot is screened from the recreational area by a group of dense plantings, where the gazebo is placed surrounded by the plantings. Towards the west side from the gazebo there is an open view and a wooden terrace. The basketball area is placed by the neighbour's wall and the children's playground is planned nearby. By the living house there are shade tolerant plant groups, which consist mainly of perennials with decorative leaves and evergreen shade loving shrubs. On both sides of the pedestrian path an open area of lawn is planned for placing the snow in wintertime.

In layout variation Nr. 2 the pedestrian path has a more wavy form and the gazebo is placed in the middle of the garden just opposite the basketball area. A decorative shade tolerant plant group is planned by the main entrance of the house on one side of the path. The gazebo is surrounded by decorative plantings with a long flowering period. Some of the plants are shade tolerant, which grow under the existing tree, but some are sun loving further away from the tree. Another bigger plant group is planned by the parking lot to screen the view from the recreational area. The spice garden is planned in the north corner of the green zone beside the household building. It consists of spices, strawberries and several decorative berry shrubs on a stock.
